Garden Ornaments in Harrogate

Harrogate gardens sit on high ground at the western edge of the Vale of York, and that altitude does most of the deciding about what survives a winter outdoors. RHS Garden Harlow Carr, on the edge of town, is well known among gardeners as a cold and testing site — plants that shrug off a Leeds winter can struggle there. Ornaments face the same test.

What lasts in Harrogate gardens

• Freeze-thaw is what breaks ornaments, not cold. Water soaks into a porous piece, freezes overnight, expands and thaws by lunchtime. Repeat that a hundred times a winter and the piece splits. Solid resin and cast stone give the water nowhere to sit.
• Height means more of it. Harrogate gets more frost cycles a year than Leeds or Hull, so a piece that lasted years at lower altitude can fail here in two winters.
• Exposure matters as much as frost. Gardens facing the open ground of the Stray catch wind that sheltered town-centre yards never see. Anything tall wants weighting or fixing down.
• Empty water features before a hard freeze. A full bowl of ice is the single most reliable way to crack a birdbath.
